St. Rita of Cascia (1386-1457)
After eighteen years of abuse, Rita became a nun soon after her husband and sons died. When she asked God to suffer like Christ, a thorn from a crucifix struck her on the forehead; she suffered and bled for fifteen years. She ate little more than the Eucharist for the last four years of her life.

Life in Christ: Catechism #2264

Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow.
